It’s been one year since I had my first baby, although it seems not that long ago that the photo above was taken when I had only to weeks to go, so I finally have the space to write a blog post about this! Pregnancy is such a special time. Dressing your new, changing shape should be a joy and Silkbody ticks all the boxes. Super comfortable, flattering, stylish, warm and natural.
I thought I’d share some of my favourite Silkbody pieces for wearing in pregnancy and new motherhood. None of these items is designed as a maternity item, which is part of their appeal. Each one is genuinely just as useful before and after pregnancy.
Sleeveless Dress
$190. Black
This classic basic stretches as you expand and is just so comfortable. If you are pregnant in summer you’ll love the way the silk/merino/cotton fabric breathes so you don’t overheat. In winter, wear it with a one of our Silkbody cardigans. This is a real investment piece and can be dressed up or down, throughout pregnancy and motherhood. Stylist, Lisa O'Neil took on the challenge to wear this dress every day for 10 days and she did a great job of creating a different look every day. Click here to read more.
Lounge Pants
$165. Avaialble in Black, White Amethyst and Sandstone
If there is one item that every woman should have, pregnant or not, it’s the lounge pants. However during pregnancy and new motherhood, they really come into their own. These straight leg pants have light elastic at the top and a drawstring waist. You can wear them below your bump. You don’t have to wear “trakkies” to stay comfortable at the end. Great for sleeping in, going for walks, doing pregnancy yoga and lounging in at home. Once baby arrives, you don’t want to be expending valuable energy on thinking about what to wear. These lounge pants are a no-brainer, taking you from bed to couch and back again, while still looking stylish. They are also fine for recovery from a c-section birth, as the waist is not tight and sits high enough to be comfortable.
Longline Sleeveless
$145. Black and colours.
During pregnancy I found this top very useful as it stretched right over my bump and still had length to sit over the top of my pants. I wore this item in combination with the lounge pants to pregnancy yoga and found I never had an uncomfortable gap.
This is also a great top when breastfeeding, if you like to do the double-singlet (one to pull down, one to pull up), especially if you are tall and have trouble finding tops that have enough length. It’s a lovely warm layer that is non-bulky and great as underwear next to the skin.
Wrap Scarf
$190. In Black and 5 colours (shown here in Warrior)
This beautiful and warm scarf is such a generous size and length that it has many uses. Wonderful post-birth to throw over your shoulders for an extra layer that doesn’t get in the way of breastfeeding. Wear it as a stylish scarf that does double duty as a warm, soft wrap for your precious bundle.
I also found it perfect for draping over the baby capsule when baby had gone to sleep and I wanted to keep it that way. Even in the car, I could stretch the wrap across the seats and create a nice dark cocooning space to encourage sleeping. Such a versatile scarf!
Long Sleeve V Neck Dress
$220. Black and colours.
If you’re pregnant in the cooler months, you’ll love this dress. The long sleeve makes it nice and cosy, the v-neck flatters and the drawstring waist sits just perfectly over your bump. Wear it with boots and a wrap scarf during winter, or with sandals for a relaxed casual look during Autum or Spring.
I found it so comfortable to wear, it looked great for the office and stretched as my baby grew. Of course it is stylish and comfortable for post pregnancy too.
V Neck Cardigan
$180. Black and many colours!
This cardigan is short enough to sit above your bump and looks great over the Silkbody dresses. Ideal for layering over the Longline Sleeveless, or team with one of Silkbody's Long Sleeve V Necks in the cooler months. With so many colours to choose from it’s easy to brighten up your pregnancy wardrobe. This quality cardigan will last year after year.
Wrap Skirt
$125. Black and colours.
This skirt got so much wear during pregnancy from me! The genius part is that it has an adjustable waist with three sets of buttons so you can expand the waist as you grow. It sits very cutely over the belly, so the waist is up high under the bust. Because it wraps across, it just opens up to fit over your bump.
By the very end, the amount that crossed over wasn’t as much, but it still worked! Great with leggings underneath and again, just so comfortable to wear. Yet another Silkbody piece that is as useful and very stylish at any other time too.
All of these Silkbody items are in our gorgeous Silkspun fabric, a blend of 72% silk, 13% merino and 15% cotton. This fabric is lightweight but still provides good coverage. It is warm in winter and cool in summer (really, you won’t overheat in this fabric or cool down easily) and is perfect for sensitive skins. It can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and dries very quickly, usually overnight.
Treat yourself to some everyday luxury over this wonderful and special time. You deserve it beautiful mama.
