In 2003 we added the wonderful Legliners to the range. Yes, that means the ones used in the 2002 photoshoot were not our brand! The Legliners were the first obvious addition to the range.

The Legliners are designed for comfort. With no side seams, flat stitched seams and a diagonal gusset for ease of movement were all considered important features. Elastic at the ankle ensures they fit snug on the leg. The men's version has a fly.

The Silkspun fabric won't stick to skin or other clothing layers as it has a smooth surface and is naturally anti-static. The 72% silk, 15% cotton and 13% merino fabric is warm but lightweight and non-bulky.

The Legliners are very useful under pants in winter for added warmth. They are not just for hiding underneath other layers though. Tamsin Cooper’s velvet coats with hand embroidered peacock feathers in rich emeralds and ruby reds worked beautifully with Emily’s Silkbody floor-length, full skirts, turbans and wonderfully coloured pieces. The collection was a celebration of femininity.

The high drama collection of Victorian exotica floated down the runway to the delight of the sold out, 1400-strong crowd, who were also treated to a veritable assault on the senses created at the talented hand of Jolene Wilkinson from Estelle Flowers. Wild, dramatic and oversized wristlets adorned the models and the jewel in the floral crown was a 1930s inspired headpiece and bouquet that featured orchids, jasmine, autumn berries and peacock feathers.

This year we celebrate ten years of Silkbody. We wish to thank all of our loyal fans with a special promotion. For each of the next ten months we will take 10% off a tried and true style - one from each of our first ten years.

In 2002 we launched Silkbody with only three styles - the Long Sleeve Crew, Short Sleeve Crew and Sleeveless Crew for men and women. Many of our styles have proven to be such classics that a large number still exist in our range ten years later - they're that good!

With only three styles and a few accessories in our range, Silkbody had humble beginnings in a small office above the Regent Theatre in Dunedin. We sold through a handful of independent outdoor stores in New Zealand who were excited about our concept of performance silk baselayers that looked great on the outside too.

Fast forward ten years and we have morphed into luxe silk lifestyle wear for everyday and travel. We have retained our roots in practical and stylish baselayers. But a classic Long Sleeve Crew in a beautiful fabric that is very comfortable to wear in a range of temperatures has a much wider appeal than wearing tramping or skiing! We soon found our customers were wearing their Silkbody everywhere from the office to a night out too. With their versatility proven, we started to add other indispensable styles like cardigans and lounge pants for women. We love getting feedback from our customers about what styles they would like and many of the new styles have been introduced because of these ideas. We also love hearing about where you wear your Silkbody.

We have heard tales of Antarctica, the Mekong, the piazzas of Italy, Mount Everest, Machu Picchu, London fashionistas, the backcountry huts of New Zealand and so many more.

Flying from the middle of the Dunedin winter to the middle of MN summer can provide some challenges in terms of what best to pack to keep oneself comfortable on the plane, in the airport and of course, the minute you set foot outside the airport!  This is where Silkbody is perfect. 

I’m a pretty casual traveler, so starting off from Dunedin (and about 5 degrees) I wore jeans, along with a silkbody hoodie (in black), camisole (in grey marle) and wrap scarf.  The wrap scarf is perfect for inside the airports, as you can wrap it around yourself like a blanket if it gets cold!  This outfit was also perfect as I made the trek from the domestic Auckland terminal to the international terminal in the 15 degree drizzle.  Once I made it onto my long haul international flight, I switched out of the jeans, and into the comfiest of comfy silkbody lounge pants (in grey marle)! 

Upon landing in LA (and about 25 degree heat!), I swapped into ¾ jeans and a sleeveless crew instead.  I also switched from sneakers to sandals.  This outfit then carried me all the way to my hometown in Minnesota!  Here are my top 3 Silkbody garments to get you comfortably through all those airports and planes:

Although Silkbody is a step in the right direction for travel planning, Silkbody alone won’t get you through your trip!  In the last year I have managed to get a perfect sized piece of hand luggage (read: maximum).  This way I can carry several extra pieces of clothing (Silkbody is particularly good because it can roll up to be small and doesn’t wrinkle much!) and any items that I don’t trust do go into my checked luggage. 

So here is my list of essential non-Silkbody travel items for a long haul flight:

1. Reusable water bottle (empty the water out of it and you will have no problems with security once you arrive in the USA.  Simply refill from a drinking fountain after going through security check points and voila!  Plenty of water for your flight!)
2. Neck pillow.
3. A good book (or books), or better yet, your e-reader.
4. Vitamins!  After picking up colds both going to and coming back from the USA, I will be travelling with my favourite variety of immune system boosting vitamins from now on!
5. Clear plastic A4 sized folder.  Yes I’m a nerd, but I always travel with a folder containing all my relevant travel documents, copies of itineraries, flight information, phone numbers, etc.  This way it’s all in one spot and I can find it easily!
6. Socks – a handy item to have if you are travelling through American airports in summer.  TSA makes you take off your shoes to go through security.  Since it was summer, I was wearing sandals, and I was mighty pleased to have a pair of socks to put on when I had to take my sandals off.
7. Ear plugs or an ipod
8. A few essential toiletries like a toothbrush and toothpaste, contact lens solution (if you need it) and a simple hand towel work wonders.  I also recommend oil absorbing/blotting sheets if you don’t want to be washing your face in airplane/airport toilets!

Other helpful tips:
Drink plenty of fluids (water!) on long haul flights. Sleep as much as you can and get up and walk around a few times (I also suggest a few leg exercises - calf raises are easy to do).  I also try to do lots of walking between my flights (the walk between the Auckland domestic and international terminal is perfect for a bit of walking, and yes even laps around the LA airport once I’ve gone through security), as I know I’ll be sitting for long hours at a time.

When flying through the USA, be aware of TSA requirements about liquids.  No liquids, aerosols or gels above 100 ml are allowed on planes (this includes cosmetics, chapstick/lip balm, some deodorants, etc.).  All passengers are allowed ONE quart sized bag.  Find more info here:  http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm  This rule applies to duty free, so if you want to purchase some type of liquid in duty free on your way into the USA and you have a domestic US flight to catch, purchase it once you land in LA as you can then pick it up at the gate on your connecting domestic flight.  If you purchase it before that, be prepared to pack it inside your luggage.  On the way out of the USA you won’t have as many problems as you are allowed to take larger volumes of liquids on domestic NZ flights.

Be polite and courteous and honest to customs and TSA officers!  

Leave plenty of time between flights (I personally recommend 4 for LA if you are catching a domestic US flight) and be aware that hold-ups can happen going through customs and security.  If you leave plenty of time, are prepared and aware, they’ll come as less of an unpleasant surprise.  LA is a big airport so you may need time to catch transportation between terminals.

And of course, always do your research before you fly!  A few minutes on the TSA website and the website of the airline(s) you are flying with, double checking luggage limits, check-in times and other security info will save you a lot of headache in the long run!

And finally – enjoy the (unique!) travel experience!  Lucky you – you’re going on an international holiday!

During the week Tamsin and I went to hear Akira Isogawa speak at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. What an inspiring and generous man. On Thursday we were guests on two morning radio shows, which was fun - MoreFM and Radio Dunedin. We gave away Silkbody and Tamsin Cooper products to lucky prizewinners. Friday was a huge day, with an interview with Good Morning TV (see the piece here http://tvnz.co.nz/good-morning/s2011-e120411-fashionweek-video-4116794) and then our own media event at Tamsin's new showroom downstairs from our own Silkbody office. Then it was off to meet the two lovely recipients of our massive prizepack - sisters-in-law Jo Peden and Jackie Barker. These women had come all the way from Wellington and Christchurch for a night away at the show, with accommodation at the luxurious Camp Estate at Larnach Castle. We had a pre-dinner drink with these two before escorting them to the Two Chefs Bistro for a reportedly amazing dining experience pre-show. We realised we had forgotten to tell the prizewinners that the show was outside. It's held on the covered railway platform, but it can get very cold! So there was a last minute lending of warm Silkbody wrap scarfs and Tamsin Cooper coats to keep the chilly Dunedin night air at bay. The Friday night show went off without a hitch and the usual backstage panic was unknown to the audience enjoying the show. On Saturday we did it all again and loved every minute of it. Day 1:

Day one started off with many hours of walking through what can only be described as a bog.  I blame this bog for the subsequent days of stinky boots, socks and feet.  We also crossed the only major stream crossing we had the entire track: 25 mile creek.  We had other streams, but this one you actually had to wade across, it was knee deep in the middle, and the current was very strong and (naturally) it was freezing cold.

Day one was also the longest day.  Track estimate was 6-8 hours, and it took us the full 8 hours to get to the hut.  It was the second longest day of tramping I’ve ever endured (Welcome hut on the west coast still takes the cake for longest and most difficult day).  However, even after a long day, finally glimpsing the hut gives you get a burst of energy, and all is well!  

Day 2: 

What was team Silkbody wearing on Day 2? Rebecca wore grass short sleeve crew, red earth long sleeve crew and emerald headwarmer, Mary wore a black longline sleeveless, chocolate short sleeve crew and cerise headwarmer and Daniel wore a Lagoon short sleeve crew.  I suspected Day 2 would be a difficult day as I knew we would have 600m of climbing to do.  What I didn’t consider was the subsequent 600m of descent!  When tackling elevation, Mary and I agree that the best piece of Silkbody gear to have is a headwarmer!  This versatile little garment can be worn to keep the ears and head warm, and also the neck.  Perfect for when you get to the top of an ascent and find the wind is gusting and you're freezing.  If you get to the bottom and find you're sweltering, they are easy enough to stuff into a pocket, or wear on your wrist.  The headwarmer is also perfect to wear on those longer tramps to cover up hair that hasn't been washed in many days!

Day 2 also made me reconsider why previously I had thought that going uphill is difficult and going downhill is easy. Since day 2 of the Rees-Dart, I have fully decided that would prefer to climb.  Perhaps climbing takes a bit more cardio fitness, but descending takes a lot more balance, uses different muscles and it's harder on the joints.  Especially if you are climbing over boulders and huge rocks.  We’re not talking a nice gradual sloping even path.  I can’t quite describe how difficult it was, and I didn’t take any photos because I was too bloody tired!  Just hours of downhill trudge, carefully picking your footing (not carefully enough at times, as both Mary and I fell over.  We were alright, just a few scratches and scrapes to the knees)…  When we finally reached the bottom, my legs felt like Jell-o and I thought I might collapse with the weight of my pack!  But Team Silkbody perseveres, and of course we made it to hut again (after about 6.5 hours - track estimate was 4-6).  The Dart hut sleeps 33, but it was so full that almost no one who was at Shelter rock hut with us the previous night had a bed (there were 55 people in the hut that night, and 12 camping).  Thankfully we had our tent!

Day 3:

Day 3 was a day trip up to the Dart Glacier.  What was team Silkbody wearing on Day 3? Rebecca wore a berry sleeveless crew and red earth long sleeve crew and emerald headwarmer, Mary wore a black longline sleeveless and  Daniel wore a black sleeveless crew.  We could have gone all the way to the Cascade Saddle (which is supposed to be an amazing view) but because Mary and I woke up and couldn’t move our legs, we thought an easy, 'packless' 4 hour walk to stretch the legs might be more our style.  The 3 of us took turns carrying one pack with our day gear in it (waterproof jackets, snacks, waterbottles).  The walk up to the Dart Glacier was pretty stunning, and the weather again was amazing.  Sun sun and more sun (a welcome change from rain and clouds that is typically found in Dunedin!).  From the Dart Hut there is also an option to do a day trip to the Whitbourn glacier, however the bridge was damaged so this was actually not an option for us.  

The best part of tramping, (aside from really testing out all of one's fabulous Silkbody apparel, of course!) is meeting people!  We met three amazing ladies from Christchurch, who have actually done nearly every tramp in NZ.  Needless to say, Team Silkbody was impressed.  Especially since this was actually the second time they had done the Dart-Rees, and prior to doing this track, they had just done the Kepler (with only 1 day of rest in-between)!  It was fabulous talking to them.  We learned a lot about the different tracks and walks, and of course, we picked up a few pointers.

Day 4:

What was team Silkbody wearing on Day 4? Rebecca wore a moss short sleeve crew and red earth long sleeve crew, Mary wore a black longline sleeveless and chocolate short sleeve crew and Daniel wore a grass short sleeve crew.  We got up early to get a good start to the next hut, as the hut warden warned of the forecast of heavy incoming rain for the next day or so – which he said might mean staying an extra night at the last hut if the side streams were too high to across safely.  Many people decided to hike out completely – doing 2 days in one – for fear of being stranded an extra day. 

The track estimate was 5-7 hours, with most of it beech forest and grassy hills.  My legs were still sore from day 2, and blisters were beginning to really add up!  However, I did have an amazing experience with a nearly tame NZ Robin that was determined there were tasty seeds in my gaiters at my boot.  It was SO CUTE!  Just sitting on my boot and trying to retrieve the seeds stuck between my boot and gaiter!  The last hour and a half of day 4 was incredibly difficult – there was at least an hour of trail that was pure rocks – it left me thinking “If I ever see another rock again it will be too soon!”  Then the a light rain started.  Then came sections of washed out track.  There was evidence of earlier season (major) flooding along the Dart, with metres of bank swept away!  The evidence of the power of the water was incredible.  

That night we actually slept in the hut because most of the people carried on to the very end of the track.  There is no way the 3 of us could have done it – we were all pretty stuffed after 7 hours of walking.  Instead we hung out in the nice warm hut, chatted with our fellow trampers and listened to the rain.  This is the night I was most pleased to have my silksak.  Aside from preventing my sleeping bag from getting so stinky, a silksak is great because the huts often get too hot!  A silksak also makes a great personal changing room inside a full hut. 

And if you are wondering about the predicted heavy rain - the river didn’t rise at all during the night, the rain stopped in the morning, and we had no qualms about leaving the next day.

Day 5:

Up bright and early to make our 2pm shuttle back to Glenorchy.  Despite the rain on day 4, our Silkbody tops dried overnight so we could wear them again on the final day.  So what was team Silkbody wearing on this, the final day? Rebecca wore a moss short sleeve crew and red earth long sleeve crew, Mary wore a black longline sleeveless and chocolate short sleeve crew and Daniel wore a grass short sleeve crew.  And even though we've been wearing some of the same tops for 5 days, no odour!

Track estimate for day 5 was 3.5-5.5 hours.  Thank goodness this day was easy!  Nice flat and wide track most of the way.  It took us 5 hours.  We made it to the end shelter at Chinaman's Bluff in plenty of time.  So we had hot drinks and snacks and it was fantastic.

All in all tramping is a really amazing experience - especially when you are lucky like us and have 5 days of beautiful weather.  Only 1 hour of walking in the rain.  For New Zealand, this is truly remarkable, as for any tramp you do, you need to be prepared that it will rain at least 1 day.  

Anyways, the Rees-Dart was awesome and highly recommended.
